The two Incas rode in a jeep driven by Baltasar Quispe. A flag fluttered from it: silver condor with wings spread against a golden sun. Julio wore a red fringed headband just as he had seen in a picture in that museum; Angelina’s temples were painted with thin vermilion streaks rising above her eyes. He thought she seemed merrier this morning; action was a tonic.

The jeep was closely followed by four trucks of campesinos and soldiers. San Rafael lay behind them now, their provisional capital: the new cuzco, navel of the four quarters of the world. Their target was the mining centre of Aracayo where the Inca had once worked as an ordinary man. Behind the jeep voices rose in a war song handed down from fiesta to fiesta.

We’ll pave the roads

With the enemy’s bones!

We’ll make his teeth

Into necklaces!

His skin will be drums

And his head a cup

And we shall drink

And we shall sing!”
